Bouncy Castles – A Historical Perspective

Bouncy Castles bring back many memories of a colourful childhood to many people inflatable insurance. Memories of children’s parties with jelly and ice-cream and parents deflating the castle and watching their kid run out of them. Nowadays there is so much more to a simple bouncy ‘castle’.

First let’s start with a bit of History. The first bouncy castle was invented in the 1950’s by an American called John Scurlock. The original idea was to create inflatable tennis court covers but after finding his employees bouncing on the cover he decided to develop this is to children’s amusement called moon walks. The original design was soon developed adding walls and over add-ons. The former know Moon Walk has been called many things over the years and is now mostly called a bouncy castle due to its physical form.

Many things have been developed from the original moon walk design and the castle is now one of the most basic inflatables for sale. These types of inflatables are cheaply available for sale of hire to everyone and are still mainly used for children at parties. However, the now large scale inflatables can be seen everywhere to a slide at a boot sale, an inflatable bungee run at a festival or a water assault course on a swimming pools.

Bouncy castles come in a large range or sizes. Baby inflatables are available from most department stores and are smaller than a standard garden shed. Large inflatable assault courses can be over 60ft long and sales of these are typically within the commercial sector. The use of bouncy castles is no longer aimed at small children’s parties but can be seen in night clubs or large social events where there are lots of people such as the traditional Bucking broncos that use bouncy castle frames for safety.

The technology is not only used for pleasure but is used by hospitals and doctors at events where a quick hospital tent needs to be erected. These inflatable structures are also used where quick shelters are needed as they can be erected in minutes. The structures are made of fire resistant PVC, have light fixtures and have rapid deflation zips for a speedy pack up. The technology is also used on large ships for emergency life rafts as they can hold large amounts of people and are buoyant.
